LGS Crystal & Q-Switch

Lanthanum Gallium Silicate (LGS) Crystal features an extensive range of applications: in addition to its piezoelectric effect and optical rotation effect, it also exhibits excellent electro-optic effect performance. The electro-optic Q-switch based on LGS crystal is applicable to various working conditions, including high repetition rate, large cross-sectional light aperture, narrow pulse width, high power, and extreme high/low temperature environments.

We utilize the electro-optic coefficient γ11 of LGS crystal to fabricate Q-switches, and select its large aspect ratio to reduce the half-wave voltage of the Q-switch. This makes it suitable for electro-optic Q-switching of all-solid-state lasers with higher power and repetition rate. For instance, it can be applied to LD-pumped Nd:YVO4 all-solid-state lasers with high average power (over 100W), achieving a maximum repetition rate of 300kHz, a maximum output power of 715W, a pulse width of 46ns, and a continuous output power of nearly 10W.

The laser damage threshold of LGS crystal is more than 9 to 10 times that of LiNbO3 crystal. Its half-wave voltage and quarter-wave voltage are lower than those of BBO switches with the same aperture, and its material and assembly costs are lower than those of RTP switches with the same aperture. Compared with DKDP switches, LGS crystal is non-hygroscopic, boasts excellent temperature stability, and can operate in harsh environments.
